Colum Kenny: Flogging our flag would bring tears to your eyes
A bailed-out banker could buy the Irish tricolour and donate it to our broken State, writes Colum Kenny
If there is one thing worse than selling your birthright for a mess of pottage, it is trying to sell your birthright and not getting the pottage that you wanted.
You can laugh or cry about the failure of the family of an Irish patriot to flog a flag from the 1916 Rising in New York last week for half a million dollars.
You could laugh, about how they really cannot be sure that this green, white and yellow/gold (rather than orange) tricolour was atop the GPO in 1916. All we know for sure is that an old soldier told a doctor that it was "captured" at that location.
