Colum Kenny: Damning report no comfort for elderly
What's the point in having an Ombudsman whose findings are ignored or rejected, asks Colum Kenny

What'S the point? We see Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly pulling her punches, and Minister for Health Mary Harney dodging for cover. We can bail out the banks for billions, but the cost of compensation for those "adversely affected by the State's failure to provide long-stay care" is beyond us.
It is, literally, a matter of priorities.
When Emily O'Reilly published her report on nursing home care last week, Ms Harney reached for her lawyers. It has become the answer to too many political problems. Tribunals. Judicial reviews. Demands to see drafts of reports so that you can tie them up in legal knots. It is a way to avoid governing.
