'CATHOLIC counselling for gay students? Banned!" screamed a headline in the 'Daily Telegraph' this week, over an article decrying the suspension of a religious student society at NUI Galway.

The Legion of Mary society was suspended earlier this month for the distribution of flyers emblazoned with the tagline, "I'm a child of God, don't call me gay".

The Purity Matters initiative appealed to LGBT students to develop "an interior life of chastity" and "move beyond the confines of the homosexual label".
