It is safe to assume that Central Bank Governor Philip Lane has been taken aback at the ferocity of the backlash since he announced strict mortgage lending rules almost two years ago.

As always in this country when it comes to property, the debate soon gets heated and often hysterical.

Now he has loosened the rules for first-time buyers, in what is a dramatic move.
