George Hook says that TV cameras are like X-rays. What he means presumably is that they see right through you. But as any X-ray technician, as he hands you your prints without a word or a giveaway flicker on their face, will tell you, X-rays on their own are no good. You need the expert to interpret what it is they are showing. In TV land, and in politics, that is the viewer. The public gaze is the real X-ray.
