Brendan Keenan: We've hit a fiscal wall -- it'll take a lot of nerve to plough through it

MARATHON runners talk about 'the Wall'; a period three-quarters through the run when it seems impossible to go on.

I have to take their word for it. But it seems a good metaphor for the marathon involved in trying to correct the Irish public finances.

If so, we may have hit the Wall. Old hands from the International Monetary Fund claim to detect a pattern in countries enduring bailout programmes. It is almost like the stages of grief, some say, and fairly predictable.
