The great waves in the eurozone too easily hide the terrible mess we have made of the public finances here
'GREECE is funded until September.' Does that phrase sound familiar? It should. "Ireland is funded until July," was Brian Cowen's mantra, even as Mr Chopra and his IMF team were buying their tickets for Dublin.
The Greek version, however, was uttered by a German government spokesman as the euro crisis threatened to become a disaster. Clara comes to Berlin. Behind both of them lay the same unspoken thought: "Why is this happening to me?"
Mr Cowen was right that Ireland had no need to borrow any money until about now. Yet there has been a bailout and a cataclysmic election for Fianna Fail in those intervening months.
