Brendan Keenan: Political honesty needed to stem torrent of job losses
HAPPY families are all alike, it says in Tolstoy's novel 'Anna Karenina', but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. A bit like job gains and losses, really.
New jobs are not only a happy story, they are nearly always the same story -- arising from Ireland's favourable tax regime and its young, educated workforce. The reasons for high-profile job losses are many and varied.
One cannot always entirely believe either story. A company that is interested only in low taxes on profits is not going to say that when announcing an investment in Ireland.
