GERRY Adams shook hands; Benjamin Netanyahu shook hands; but Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan did not.
Well, I suppose they weren't meant to. But the sight of two men standing side-by-side behind podiums irresistibly brought memories of peace processes. Perhaps that is what it was.
It was certainly a gesture of support for an embattled Taoiseach. Usually reliable sources say Mr Lenihan considered an attempt to replace Mr Cowen, but decided against it. Which, from the point of view of economic commentary, is probably just as well.
