Brendan Keenan: Lenihan must make haste slowly to cure economy
FESTINA lente -- make haste slowly -- said the ancient Romans. "Don't panic," said the futuristic 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. Good advice in both cases, but hard to follow when you're in trouble.
And we are in a good deal of trouble. But treading carefully -- although obviously more important when there is trouble -- is not in tune with the times. Not only are instant solutions demanded for everything, but drama is essential to any position.
Broadcasters fear their audiences will vanish if anyone speaks continuously for more than 20 seconds. Make that 10 seconds if they're saying anything complicated. Newspapers are more and more determined to find somebody to blame, and less interested in explaining what went wrong. And everybody always thinks that something must be done.
