Brendan Keenan: Buy rather than die for your country
As the Budget looms, Michael Noonan might be wise to take an optimistic view of 2012, spurring on consumers

'MR Herbert Hoover says it's time to buy." So runs my favourite song from the Great Depression of the Thirties, with the songwriter adding: "So let's have another cup of coffee, and we'll have another piece of pie."
In a battle against recession/depression, the consumers are the poor bloody infantry, expected to do their duty by going over the top and buying.
It seems a strange business, especially with memories of the bubble so fresh, that sacrifice should consist of heading for the shops and spending whatever you've got.
