Today is the day of the two Marys, I cannot let my Mam go
Holy Mary is revered in Ireland and the Hail Mary is our favourite prayer. Today is the Feast of the Assumption, the 15th of August, the day some of us believe Holy Mary was taken into heaven.
The fifteenth has always been a big day out. Féile Mhuire 'sa bhFomhar it was known as in the days when Irish was the countrywide vernacular. That's the festival of our Lady of the Harvest.
The Pattern Day, it's called now. The Pattern probably grew out of the banning of churches and Masses back in the days of the Penal Laws. Even the English couldn't burn down the sky. So we met out in the open.
