Holding the line and meeting old friends at New York's parade

We were on one of the side streets off 5th Avenue, all dressed up in green. The street was full of diamond shops and there, in the doorway, was a Kerry piper, in full kilt, venting his lungs at full belt.
It takes a good while to warm up the pipes. The first few blows were more like car brakes or banshee screeches but then out came a perfect version of 'The Minstrel Boy' and he had us all buzzed up.
The piper would lead the way on what was the biggest day of the year for the thousand or more pipe bands marching in the 2016 New York St Patrick's Day parade.
