Wretched FG must raise game as Dail term begins

IT was a bewildering day in the Dail yesterday, with an 'Anglo' cement truck blocking the gates, protest songs being sung by community workers outside and everything from bank guarantees to by-elections cropping up inside.
But the third opinion poll in the space of a week tells a by-now-familiar story for Fine Gael. Its TDs will be alarmed to see that the party is tied with Fianna Fail at 24pc at a time when just under 450,000 people are on the dole and more than a quarter of house holders are in negative equity.
When Fine Gael cannot make hay at a time like this, and offer voters an attractive alternative, then more trouble lies ahead for Enda Kenny from the rebels in his party.
