Walkout was significant – but timing was awful

COMMENTS by four sergeants that they and their colleagues had lost confidence in Commissioner Martin Callinan plunged relations between their representative association and the authorities into turmoil.

This was the first time that such an extreme view had been expressed at a representative association's conference.

It was even more surprising that the remarks should be made by members of the sergeants' and inspectors' body, which has been noted since its formation in the mid-1970s for its calm and measured response to crises.
