The victory secured by the gardai to be granted full trade union status, including the right to strike, comes after a hard-fought campaign.

The gardai have lobbied successive governments over more than three decades to allow them the opportunity to be put on the same footing as other representative groups in negotiating pay and conditions of their members.

But they failed to make any significant progress until the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors lodged a complaint with the European Committee of Social Rights.
