Vicky Notaro: Young people may be more savvy – but emotions involved in sex are the same
Sex and teenagers is always going to be a tricky subject, but it's important to remember this was not a question about changing laws, about raising or lowering the legal age of consent but about what's most appropriate for our young people.
Our attitude to what is the appropriate age of consent changes as we age. According to our survey, 35pc of thirtysomethings believe 17 or younger is an appropriate age to lose one's virginity. For twenty-somethings, 45pc feel 17 or younger is appropriate. This is a little more liberal than the attitudes of fortysomethings.
This is to be expected. The amount of time that has passed since one's own deflowering surely has an impact on what we feel is right for others.
