True beauty is in the eye of those who can talk the talk

England is better looking than Ireland but we have the edge in self-promotion, writes Declan Lynch

'Of COURSE, Ireland is beautiful," said David Cameron. "But why is the UK 12 places behind?"

He was responding to a global survey which found that Ireland is the 12th most beautiful country in the world, while the UK languishes in the mid-20s, behind the likes of Finland, Japan and ourselves.

And this is the UK which would include Scotland and Wales, thought by many to be quite rich in scenery. It would also presumably include the picturesque parts of Northern Ireland, in theory at least. But that is an argument for another day.
