Too little too late as battling Brian only fights for himself

Alison O'Connor

Brian Cowen is beginning to look like the greatest leader that Ireland never had. His career as Taoiseach will be bookended by the prospect of the huge potential he simply never managed to reach.

It's enough to make you crazy, and the more I think about it the crosser I find myself getting. How dare he play with our emotions in this way, attempting a major comeback in the dying days of his regime, and all seemingly related to machismo.

Yet again this week the Fianna Fail leader has chosen to tantalise us with the Brian Cowen who might have been, the one we could have done with so badly over the past two years. It's the Brian who is sharply dressed, stands tall, has a sparkle in his eyes, uses his hands enthusiastically to emphasise his point, and tells it like it is. He speaks plainly, communicates effectively and fights his corner with gusto, as opposed to the usual barely concealed ill will. How can it be explained? Did he get up on Budget day take a look in the mirror and decide: "Today's the day I'm going to wow them".
