Tom Lyons: Daughter's huge wedding bill even went to company

Tom Lyons

THEY were once the richest family in Ireland but the Quinn children were never ones for high society. So when Sean Quinn's second youngest daughter, Aoife, married solicitor Stephen Kelly in August 2010, the affair seemed predictably low-key.

The bride kept the celebrations local; they wed in St Mary's Church outside Belturbet in Co Cavan followed by a reception at the Quinn's five-star hotel, the Slieve Russell in Ballyconnell. Reporters on hand to chronicle the event were unimpressed with the lack of glitz on display at what appeared to be a traditional country wedding.

Or so it seemed. As the Sunday Independent reveals this weekend, the bill for what turned out to be a lavish event was befitting of a billionaire's daughter, running into hundreds of thousands of euro. What was unusual was that the Quinns got the family business, the Quinn Group, to stump up the cost of it.
