Yesterday, two of this country's most self-destructive money addicts gave us reason to hope that they will avoid her fate by weaning themselves off the state funding which has replaced their addiction to private capital since 2007.

Bank of Ireland has surprised almost everybody by finally forming a meaningful relationship with a group of outside investors while Allied Irish Bank presented the first concrete evidence that loan losses have stabilised.
