'IS it Labour's way or Frankfurt's way?" Eamon Gilmore thundered yesterday during the first detailed press conference about his party's economic policy.

He can hardly have expected such a swift and unequivocal answer from Frankfurt, but it came just hours later when European Central Bank governor Jean-Claude Trichet effectively told the opposition to shut up.

"Let's apply the plan -- that's my message," the governor said in a message that was just about as blunt as any central banker could be.
