We are overjoyed that Facebook is to introduce a "sympathy" button. So, your friend or relative has suffered a bereavement? What better way to pass on your condolences than clicking on social media. That's preferable to going to a boring old funeral.

The sympathy button might have been useful for Barack Obama and David Cameron as they posed for a selfie with Danish leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela's memorial service.

They could have saved themselves the bother of turning up at all by clicking on the Facebook emoticon.
