'Why can you never look like that?" is one of the most popular openings to a relationship dispute, and perhaps the easiest to escalate to mutual recriminations.

Living, as we do, in an image-dominated society, it is impossible for either men or women to reconcile their own daily visual experience of the female half of that relationship with the exotic beauties of magazine and movies.

And even the subjects of those oh-so-perfect magazine shoots would admit that they are not the glossed and perfected mannequins that one supposes.
