Success of visits has given me a reason to feel proud again
Amid all the gloom, some good news is finally coming from home, writes Marcus Spray from San Diego
Studying in San Diego for the year among fellow international students, often the only connections to home have been the endless headlines reminding me of the desperate state of our economy. In the eyes of many students here, Ireland no longer conjures images of thatched cottages and rolling countryside, but of bailouts, destitution and downright failure.
While the sporting arena has given me great pride and bragging rights -- especially over the English students -- in all other realms I've found myself squirming and writhing. From classes to general banter, facing up to the reality has been a struggle.
So, of course, the success of the visits by Queen Elizabeth and US President Barack Obama has given me new cause to finally feel some pride again.
