Sports grants show TDs don't change their spots

IT is as if 'Irish Pictorial Weekly' needs more material. And the politicians in the Department of Sport are intent on providing it. On the Friday before Christmas, one junior minister in the department blogged that Nenagh had just secured the highest single grant allocation. North Tipperary Labour TD Alan Kelly had delivered the Christmas pork.

The night before Mr Kelly's blog posting, the satirical 'Irish Pictorial Weekly' had a sketch suggesting that politicians from all political parties were the same. In the sketch, the Fianna Fail man became a Fine Gael man. And then a Labour man. And then a Sinn Fein man. We looked from one to another. It was impossible to say which was which. It is funny because there's a large slice of truth in it.

Fine Gael's Michael Ring might not agree. In fact, he painted himself as a man redressing the imbalance of the past when interviewed by Sean O'Rourke on Monday, December 3. Mr Ring, the Junior Minister for Sport, talked about those counties that fared badly under Fianna Fail. He was now going to "load them up". Good man, Michael. A modern-day Robin Hood.
