NO one expected the Esat Digifone consortium to win the competition to get Ireland's second mobile phone licence in 1994.
The company, put together by the young radio boss, Denis O'Brien, was viewed as the underdog that would most likely be beaten to the prize by the Persona consortium that included the US phone giant Motorola or indeed any of the other big hitters.
So it was an incredible feat when Esat Digifone walked away with this highly lucrative licence and the decision left the losers smarting and spoiling for a fight.
