Among the myriad of words -- spoken and written -- regarding child sex abuse and the Catholic Church in recent days, one central reality should not be forgotten.

The law of the land should always supersede the laws of the Catholic Church -- or indeed any other religious denomination.

However, Monsignor Maurice Dooley, a former professor of canon law, gave vent to a still-strongly held belief among many conservative Catholics a few days ago.
