HE played with Jerry Lee Lewis and was among the country's best-known musicians. Yesterday showbusiness figures paid tribute to Paul Ashford, who died in a Dublin hospital after taking ill on Sunday.

In recent years Mr Ashford, who also played with the Miami Showband, had led his own band but his career began with one of the iconic rock groups of the '60s, the Chosen Few, with his closest boyhood friend, the late Fran O'Toole.

Both Paul Ashford (61) and Fran O'Toole joined the Miami when older members broke away with the Sands, and Mr Ashford was best man at Fran O'Toole's wedding.
