IT is official: evictions are back. It is official : the State can force you on to the dole.

It is official : discrimination against women is Government policy. So say the guidelines of the Personal Insolvency Service. The State, for so long posing as the protector of the poor, has now taken on the role of their persecutor. In today's Ireland, the more vulnerable you are, the more likely you are to be punished.

Middle Ireland, which today finds itself in hopeless mortgage arrears, contains neither saints nor sinners.
