An impressive 3.6 million people visited the four sites of the National Museum last year. But recent revelations of staff unrest take much of the gloss off the achievements of the celebrated institution.

There must be something seriously wrong with an organisation where 40pc of staff were deemed in a workplace well-being report to be at risk of developing anxiety or depression.

One-in-five employees reported they were "often" or "always" subjected to bullying, while another 20pc said they were "sometimes" the victims of bullying.
