WITHIN a fortnight of getting back into power for the first time in 14 years, Fine Gael finds itself face-to-face with the unwanted ghosts of the party's last term in office during the mid-1990s.

The Moriarty Tribunal report has brought into sharp focus Fine Gael's fundraising practices and how open it was to donations from big business at the time.

Discussing the report yesterday, Transport Minister Leo Varadkar put it mildly when he said: "I think it's fair to say Fine Gael doesn't come out of this episode smelling of roses."
