Seanad's new arrival Hildegarde will need patience of a saint
THE heat may have been making him a bit cranky, but Ronan Mullen was in no mood yesterday to extend a warm welcome to Hildegarde Naughton, the newest senator on the (chopping) block when she took her seat in the Upper House.
The former Fine Gael mayor of Galway, who is replacing Taoiseach's nominee Martin McAleese in the Seanad, made her entrance to a general buzz of good vibrations. Senators from all parties and none strolled over to shake Hildegarde's hand and wish her the best. But Ronan wasn't exactly flaithulach with his failte when he stood to speak.
The independent senator began by wishing to "be associated" with the welcomes, but the pleasantries ended there.
