LAST Monday afternoon, the inner sanctum of Sinn Fein had to make a momentous decision. The Independent candidate Sean Gallagher appeared unstoppable with a 15-point lead in the opinion polls and it was obvious that their man, Martin McGuinness, couldn't win.
Sinn Fein's ruling elite acknowledged that hurting Gallagher would not help their man, and that the fallout from the attack could even rebound and dent McGuinness's bandwagon.
But in a series of discussions, it was concluded that a full-frontal attack on live television had the potential to change the outcome of the election.
