Public confidence in politicians and the establishment has never been lower -- but that was before yesterday's hearing in Leinster House.
An Oireachtas Committee was investigating a subject that has raised deep resentment and anger among voters: Ivor Callely's outrageous €81,090 expenses claim.
Yet all of the movers and shakers in public affairs appear hell-bent on covering up a much larger potential scandal: suspicions that SIPTU had access to a €2.3m slush fund.
