John Bruton's Fine Gael needed a benevolent sugar daddy to help bail them out but they created a greedy bagman in Michael Lowry.
Lowry's talent was for flattering businessmen into peeling off rolls of cash for whatever cause he was promoting -- and in 1990 it was Fine Gael.
Bruton had inherited a party with a IR£1.3m debt crisis and little prospect of attaining office.
