THE fever that had raged through the Cowen-must-go backbenchers had quelled by the time the Taoiseach addressed the nation just after 7pm last night.
Earlier yesterday, senior Fianna Failers were betting Brian Cowen would seek dissolution of the Dail after a succession of backbenchers called on him to go. One long-time Cowen loyalist dismissed the rumours as wishful thinking.
"It's not in his nature to quit but he is finished as leader of the party and as Taoiseach," he said.
