IRELAND Inc was bankrupt as the new year rolled into January -- but Fianna Fail and the Green Party had run out of ideas long before the bailiffs moved into Government Buildings.

Every other night, another Fianna Fail or Green Party minister would reassure us that they had a plan -- but the more they explained, the fewer people believed them.

Flanked by officials from his department, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan would make calming noises while Taoiseach Brian Cowen demanded that we stop asking him awkward questions.
