Sam Smyth: Agent's derring-do helps fuel conspiracy theories

THE suspected spy at the centre of the forged Irish passports scandal is well-known to 'securicrats' in Dublin for his derring-do exploits.

As an intelligence officer, it would have been his responsibility to provide safe addresses for the use of agents using forged Irish passports in Dubai.

An empty house cannot be easily checked out from abroad and buys time for an agent whose identity is questioned, according to intelligence sources.
