ENDA Kenny's victory yesterday was a retelling of the story of the old stag that outsmarted his younger rivals by deploying a rat-like cunning and plausible manner.

No one has ever doubted his geniality, but Mr Kenny had the wit to bring in bad lieutenants with rodents' instincts to further his interests.

But the now undisputed leader of Fine Gael had another advantage over his opponents: the inherited knowledge learned through generations in the second-oldest profession.
