THE bad news is that the Irish entry to the Clipper Round the World Race, Cork Clipper II, has been holed and is out of contention. The good news is that Fine Gael is supplying a crew, under its swashbuckling skipper Cap'n Wrong End Kenny. We catch him striding the quarter-deck now, as his parrot and financial adviser Dick Brutal sits on his shoulder, squawking: "Pieces of 7.9999 recurring."

LIKE you, I've been listening to many opinions on the George Lee episode. The one thing that has stood out in all the conversations is just how out of touch the political insiders seem to be with the rest of the population. The political insiders -- the politicians themselves, party members and canvassers as well as the political pundits and correspondents who live inside the world of the Dail -- speak of George's betrayal, his petulance and something called procedure. Of his many crimes, the idea of not knowing your place appears to be a significant offence.

THE last time I was in Detroit, my lunch date was stabbed in the neck and the man I was supposed to interview resigned in a stripper-corruption-gunfight scandal.

THE attempt to talk Iran down from its nuclear ambitions is going badly. Yesterday, Tehran formally told the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN watchdog, that it would move further ahead with its uranium-enrichment programme. This will take it one big step closer to a nuclear-weapons capability.

Belonging to Fine Gael must be like being a bride-to-be who is perpetually jilted at the altar. The Irish public keeps leading you on, getting your hopes up, promising that this time they really will go through with the marriage ceremony, and then, at the last minute, changing their minds and tying the knot with Fianna Fail. Again. Remember how excited they all were before the last election? Their expectant faces as they contemplated consummating the new political union in government? The disappointment when reality dawned?

Last June I introduced you all to Don Gormleone. A character based loosely on our own Environment Minister, but one who seemed to leap fully formed from the pages of Mario Puzo with a brief diversion to the volumes of James Herriot to kit himself out in a sturdy tweed jacket and a nice pair of cords. Don Gormleone is a man of boundless self-belief whose schoolmaster air struggles unsuccessfully to conceal a temper of volcanic proportions and a penchant for vendettas and grudges that makes your average Sicilian goombah look like the disappointed runner-up in the Greystones ICA rhubarb tart competition.

Some weeks, I have to beg for money

The banks are running the country and are fast running it into the ground; I speak from personal experience of dealing with them on a daily basis. Unless we are going to end up as a state of social welfare recipients and civil servants, the Government has to stop the banks in their tracks before any more damage is done. We are in a very serious state and, up to now, there has been a lot of lip service. So today I am imploring the people of Ireland to please take notice of what is happening in this country and to stand together and do something to protect our people and our businesses against these financial vipers.

Repossession of family home is just the beginning of the nightmare for many

IN the High Court last November, a young couple crushed into crowded seats in the teeming court room, waiting for their names to be called from the long list of repossession and bankruptcy cases. They glanced up and smiled as Bernard Durkan, their local Fine Gael TD from Kildare, pushed open the court room door and squeezed himself into the back of the room. The couple's names were called. They got to their feet and strained through the mass of bodies to make themselves visible to the judge.

When Mr Justice Barry White imposed a prison sentence of almost seven years on Eamonn Lillis, he also chose to make stinging, and to my mind, highly relevant comments about the coverage of his trial, and subsequent events, by the media.

One of the first female combat soldiers in the Irish Army has lifted the lid on life in the military -- telling how, on overseas missions, soldiers became regulars in back-street brothels.

The economy has stabilised, we are told. But don't expect to feel any improvement in 2010, even though it is hoped that numbers will come forth before the end of the year to show that recovery has in fact begun.

EVERYONE was against it. Left wingers, right wingers, Fine Gael, Labour and even a lot of Fianna Fail TDs. In fact, some Fianna Failers seemed apoplectic about the unfairness of it all. And yet, the Government is getting away with it. How? And why on earth did they insist on doing something so obviously unpopular?

THERE was nothing dramatic or remarkable in Juliette Hussey's last conversation with her first cousin, Celine Cawley. But in some ways the chat they had about everyday stuff is exactly how Juliette will remember her.
