AT a recent retail conference for managers of Supervalu and Centra stores, delegates were presented with the latest research on the evolving beast that is the modern consumer.

The research, commissioned by Musgraves, the grocery wholesaler that runs the chains, was designed to help managers get the most out of customers. But it also unveiled a new breed of consumer who could be the retailers' worst nightmare: tight-fisted, demanding and sceptical.
