Richard Humphreys: Let's make divorce a little less painful
Recent calls to reduce the four-year wait for divorce are welcome and the time to take this step is now.
Back in February, I made a submission to the Constitutional Convention urging them to look at a number of reforms, including reducing the four-year waiting period for a divorce that is enshrined in Article 41 of the Constitution.
So it was good to hear a similar call last weekend from Muriel Walls, Chair of the Legal Aid Board, who stated that the current constitutional provision can trap people within the family law system for far too long.
This is an issue that the Constitutional Convention should certainly take up, and amongst myriad ideas for tinkering with the 1937 document, it is one proposal that would make a big difference to a lot of people.
