Recent cases raise serious questions about our ability to deal with growing threat

Garda special branch and Defence Forces intelligence officers have been monitoring suspected Islamic extremists in Ireland since the late 1990s.

By 2005, the same year as the London 7/7 bombings, around 30 al-Qa'ida sympathisers were under surveillance here.

These were people suspected of providing financial or logistical support to jihadists operating abroad.
