Polanski supporters overshadow Listowel
Support for a convicted sex attacker has prompted outrage, but, as Carol Hunt points out, some Hollywood stars have gone further

IT'S been comforting for us townies recently to be able to point the finger at the beleaguered people of Listowel and sneer, "Gombeens."
The scenes in court where around 50 people lined up to commiserate with Danny Foley, who had just been convicted of sexual assault, demonstrated all that is rotten in small-town Ireland, so we said.
In the media, on blogs, Twitter and other networking sites, there has been a rush by us sophisticated urbanites to excoriate the self-proclaimed "supporters" of a convicted sex offender as backward, insensitive and much, much worse. Even better, we could pounce on the fact that there was a silly Catholic priest involved -- who had earlier declared in a character statement that poor Dan Foley had the "highest respect for women" and that there wasn't "an abusive bone in his body".
