People Are Talking: Hollywood stars put Westmeath on the map

Christopher Jackson

Westmeath; it's not Ireland's best-known county. It's not that it's a bad county, it has lovely lakes and is home to Michael O'Leary and the blonde one off One Direction. It's just not a county that's easily remembered, not like say Kilkenny, a county with 34 All-Ireland titles, two Michelin stars restaurants, and other things that make Wexfordians green with envy.

Longford aside, Westmeath is the county most forgotten, the one that escapes the minds and tongues of young geography students everywhere, even in Westmeath itself. It is to Ireland what Emilio Estevez is to the Sheen family, it is to Meath what Billy Baldwin is to Alec Baldwin.

But not last week. Last week the county and Multyfarnham in particular shone. Hollywood came to the village, as it was visited not only by Cillian Murphy, but by Hollywood legend Johnny Depp too. It was the greatest thing to happen to Multyfarnham since it won the 1977 Tidy Towns competition.
