Paul Whitington: Casting a cold eye on 'silver spoon' generation
IRISH films are overhyped and often disappointing, but today a homegrown movie is released that really should not be missed. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, 'What Richard Did' is an accomplished, intelligent, thought-provoking and unerringly relevant drama that examines a life destroyed by a split second of madness, and casts a cold spotlight on Ireland's so-called 'silver spoon' generation.
Richard Karlsen (played with great skill by newcomer Jack Reynor) is a young man who seems to have it all. The only child of wealthy parents and the star of his school rugby team, he's just started dating a pretty new girlfriend and is looking forward to university.
But when a row between him and the girl's ex sparks up at a drunken party, Richard accidentally kills his rival and has to live with the consequences.
