Patrick Kinsella: BBC's loss will be RTE's gain as cuts deepen

RTE's appointment of Kevin Bakhurst as managing director of news and current affairs is a surprise, and a very clever move.

It's a surprise because Bakhurst is a career BBC man, rising from junior researcher to number two in BBC's multimedia news division, in charge of radio, TV and web operations.

He's a company man through and through, who regularly uses Twitter to defend BBC news coverage and his colleagues, so it's a puzzle why he'd want to leave his position in a division that spends more than twice RTE's entire annual budget.
