Our foolish leaders approved a deal that will ruin this country

On Wednesday, with solid, self-destructive determination, the Fianna Fail party and the Green Party, together with self-interested and cute Independents, voted in favour of a deal that will be the ruin of this country.

That was done in the first part of the day. They then went on to force through a complicated piece of banking legislation giving virtually unlimited powers to Brian Lenihan, the architect of most of the country's ills since Brian Cowen became Taoiseach.

Lenihan, according to contemporaries at school, was regarded as hardly numerate. His skills were with words, not figures, and his emollient voice of comforting nonsense about our economy -- for which RTE has given generous access at any time he wanted it -- has soothed those who are stupid or who wish to hang on to power.
