Our efforts in Government have not been universally acclaimed but that's no surprise

Eamon Gilmore

The local and European elections take place in just a few weeks' time. In deciding how to vote many people will be influenced by issues of importance in their own locality and the attributes of individual candidates. This is as it should be. Local issues are important. The personal qualities of candidates do matter

Inevitably, many voters will also cast their ballot on national issues. I welcome that. As leader of the Labour Party I'm very happy to defend our record, set out our plans for the future and stand up for our beliefs and our values.

Because the record is good. I am fully aware that there are many people in this country who have had a tough time in recent years.
